Current Employee - Software Engineer in Seattle, WA
Current Employee - Software Engineer in Seattle, WA

I have been working at New Relic full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Never ending supply of interesting problems to work on. Very intelligent co-workers who are also pleasant to work with. Excellent work life balance, great office space with amazing views.

Cons

High growth rate appears to be making it difficult for management to keep up. Difficult to progress career, promotions go through at a frustratingly slow pace. No 401k match.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure engineers know exactly what they are being asked to do and why it needs to be done. It is extremely difficult to do good engineering if you don't know what is being requested and why it needs to be done.

    Pros

Smart, talented co-workers. Incredible office spaces designed for the communities and team members they serve. Pre-IPO. CEO Lew Cirne and VP of Engineering Bjorn Freeman-Benson.

    Cons

Empire building runs rampant, especially on non-technical teams. Say they put customers and employees first, then make decisions that go in the opposite direction. Without a senior manager's support, you'll be left to fend for yourself. Brogrammer culture throughout the organization, worse on business side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more. Encourage managers to promote corporate values as stated by exec and HR team. Look back and reconsider the loss of talent you've experienced recently.
