I worked at New World Systems

Pros

Modern technologies are employed (Lab Management, TFS, .NET, Continuous Integration, Patterns and Practices Frameworks, etc). Assignments are interesting and enjoyable.

Some developers at New World are very knowledgeable and are team players. There are tremendous growth opportunities to learn new skills. Employees are generally friendly and easy to work with. Managers are open to discussions and do consider employee input.

Employees are very dedicated and work very hard to meet deadlines and customer needs. The typical work ethic of an employee here vastly exceeds that of an average employee at another development organization.

Cons

My bigest complaint is that number of hours worked by an employee seems to be valued more than an employees contributions. At a minimum 45 hours of work per week are expected. Most valued employees typically work 50 hours per week. Employees are expected to put long hours in, but the organization does not support true flex time. If the work expectations and work arrangements were slightly improved, most employee dissatisfaction would be resolved.

Leadership positions seem to be routinely filled by hiring external candidates instead of promoting from within. This is unfortunate for employees who desire career growth opportunities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider changing some HR policies in order to retain employees.

I have been working at New World Systems

    Pros

    Growing, thriving company.
Opportunity to work with large scale enterprise applications.
    Employee ownership opportunities available.
    Strong benefits.
    Opportunities for Professional growth.
Full of intelligent hard working people.
    Good bonus opportunities

    Cons

Slow to keep up with trends towards a more comfortable workplace. Recent improvements in dress code and flex time probably did not go far enough. Internet access a little restrictive.

I worked at New World Systems

    Pros

-- the company does a pretty decent job of using some new technology in the development process, but they also have a lot of legacy code too that's holding them back

    Cons

-- developers are micro-managed by the company's processes
-- All of the challenging work has been taken away. Highly talented developers are forced to work for weeks at a time, 9 hours a day, doing menial tasks like regression testing and fixing punctuation in existing XML comments to satisfy Style Cop.
    -- Style Cop
-- daily standup meetings that are about as useful and exciting as watching paint dry
-- a cheerleader who yells 'woohoo' at the end of every standup meeting, it was cute the first 65 times...
-- the solution and software architects are unapproachable, their titles get in the way
    -- principal's office mentality
-- People are not allowed to speak their mind in this environment, any negativity is squashed right away. All this leads to is pent up frustration and resentment, which usually ends up in the frustrated person resigning.
-- Too many bosses, or people who think they are bosses. Move back to a more peer-oriented environment.
-- the code base is overly managed, developers have very little discretion in their work
-- no time to play with new technology, 35+ hours of ideal time each week is expected

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-- stop treating the development staff like they are replaceable parts in a machine, rather than homogenizing the developers, take advantage of their differences and specific talents
-- focus on making New World a great place to work as a developer, the rest will take care of itself, ask Google and Quicken Loans
-- actually care about your employees
