I worked at New York Public Library

    Pros

colleagues bond because of terrible working conditions. they will generally hire anyone and the interview process for a librarian position was incredibly low pressure.

    Cons

one of the lowest paying professional librarian salaries in the country, located in one of the most expensive places to live. their reputation is totally undeserved, its terribly mismanaged and hard work, intelligence and progressive attitudes are not valued. if you want to make a difference in people's lives, or work in an intellectually stimulating place, do not work here. aside from all that, patrons are verbally abusive and make physical threats often - be prepared to deal with it yourself as security often avoids situations like that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

as some of the other reviewers have mentioned, its similar to working in the DMV. STOP hiring just anyone who walks in the door and hire people who are high achievers. make the effort to get rid of dead weight in management and in lower levels. this is why turnover is high and you lose enthusiastic and smart people. reward your employees with better compensation and/or allow them to work where they want to work. hire people who have the skills that are needed in their location - ie, in Spanish Harlem, look for clerks and librarian who speak Spanish. seems elementary but apparently its beyond the grasp of management.
