    Pros

Opportunity for advancement; Multiple work sites you could transfer to if openings are available.

    Cons

Is a NYS agency so politics is huge in decision making.

  2. Good organization, frustrating to work as a contractor

I have been working at New York State Office of Mental Health as a contractor (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Good, important mission with a whole lot of facets
    - Get to work anywhere in the state
    - People really need the services

    Cons

    - Bureaucracy to the max.
    - How many sheets of paperwork do we have to fill out to get paid for a day's work?
    - "Stipend" rates exploit workers and might be illegally low if classed as wages.
    - Seems like policy has attention deficit disorder sometimes.

    Advice to Management

    - You ask people to work for you because they're talented, smart, and capable, but then you treat them like fools and dictate terms in a disrespectful way. It has a cost, and it'd be worth reconsidering how you interact with contractors.
