New York Times Sales Representative in New York, NY:   (Current Employee)

Pros

It looks great on the resume. Feels good to work for a newspaper with such a strong brand.

Cons

Politics, politics, politics. Onboarding process is weak. Opportunities for advancement are fewer as industry faces troubled times. Lip service is paid to things like "pay for performance" and "performance management" but the managers I've witnessed are so busy looking out for themselves that they could care less about developing their employees. The environment now is not for the weak of heart. There are cuts and reorganizations happening every year.

Advice to Senior Management

Survive. Set the standards for communication across the company. When you invest money in a new initiative or technology, give it some time to "take" before switching gears and wasting the investment. Oh, and if employees could access all of their online services with one user name and password, that would be brilliant.
