Former Employee - Manager, Business Development in New York, NY

I worked at New York Times full-time for more than a year

Pros

Nice people, good work life balance, interesting work.

Cons

Too much process & red tape. Lacking innovation and fast movers. Stale brand - perhaps with the recent acquisition - things will improve. Management is lazy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate the red tape/process.

If you prove yourself as an ambitious, valuable employee, the possibilities are wide open

I have been working at New York Times full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work with very intelligent, capable, ambitious people. They value employees who are active, involved, ambitious and open to new responsibilities. If you prove yourself as one of these people, you can get involved in very business-critical, high-profile projects and awarded and recognized for successful work. The company is surprisingly innovative and progressive. It's a true media company, not a newspaper company.

    Cons

Sometimes highly political and bureaucratic. Some great ideas get stifled because of this, but those who have the stamina to see a project through multiple rounds of rejection, can usually see it through.

It's a good place to do good journalism work, but not family-friendly

I have been working at New York Times full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The NYT may be the best place to work if you want to focus on doing the best journalism out there. You will have the resources you need and will be working with many of the best people.

    Cons

Their benefits for people with families are lame. For example, slim maternity leave, not a day of paid paternity leave, and no help with daycare. You are likely to only get a raise if you have an offer from elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be stingy with your employees.
