I worked at Newark Element 14 full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Amazing level of talent in the company. HR does a great job of hiring intelligent motivated people. Director level on down are committed and driven.

Cons

The corporate mission is all over the place. The president is basically implementing mission from Farnell, so no real drive or energy at Newark/e14. Makes for a schizophrenic work environment when strategy changes so often

    I have been working at Newark Element 14

    Pros

    Good benefits/vacation/sick time
    if you want to be just regular warehouse worker then this is good job

    Cons

    If you have a desire to climb the ladder and you not one of the "good boys" you have no chance.
    No opportunities for advancement.
    Supervisor's/Managers are uneducated/untrained and most all need customer service skills and don't know how to talk to associates
    Managers/Supervisors dip snuff!!!!!!!!! Right in front of employees!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get a DEGREE...not just have your job because of who you are or who you know.
    Promote the right people not just your buddies
    Why do we have managers with only one person reporting to them? Why we have Senior Managers with only one direct report?

    I worked at Newark Element 14 full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Access to public transportation
    * Some nice people
    * Tremendous systems inefficiencies/lack of procedures may provide opportunities to make a difference.
    * Conscious of family/life needs.

    Cons

    * In general the company is unbalanced toward extroverts. If you are not leading the PowerPoint meeting/in front of the group you will not get promoted.
    * Too many people are "busy" revising other employee's work and claiming these changes as an accomplishment.
    * The company quickly over complicates potential ideas to the point of making them unfeasible.
    * Lack of systems integration and standard operating procedures causes poor execution of attempted changes. One step forward, two steps back spent recovering.
    * There are departments working around other departments several times over to try to get things done = very frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Focus employees on 1 to 3 keys areas, not 7 to 10.
    * Stop the window dressing, start improving back end systems that integrate.
    * Upgrade back-end systems to modern times. Spend some bucks to keep up with your competitors.
    * Stop rearview mirror managing, set some direction, and let your employee strive toward goals for a few quarters, stop changing direction/top priorities every other week.
    * Stop operating the business like a confused start-up business, starting developing a foundation of standard operating procedures within and between teams.
    * Stop coddling employees that don't have skills. The cost is higher than what it appears as other employees have to continually assist.
    * Learn how your systems really work (roll up your sleeves for a day) and experience what the capabilities, limitations, and pain points are. Current levels of systems understanding are hindering good decision making.
