Former Employee - Brand Management Intern in Atlanta, GA

I worked at Newell Rubbermaid as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Corporate culture is fantastic, easy to shape your career how you want it (mobility), constructive and development teams, and great training

Cons

Went on a hiring freeze so wasn't extended an offer at the end of the internship, benefits aren't that great

Advice to ManagementAdvice

For each project, make it clear (for interns) who they need to share information with and receive approval from

    Cons

    No Work/Life Balance
    Compensation below average
Incompetent Management - (Wrong plp running teams) Ex- Production Guy running Global Ops.
Never appreciative for any extra hard work
    Don't value people.
    No Accountability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company is surviving due to the Brand Equity like Sharpie, Paper-mate, Parker, EXPO and because of your mismanagement (Supply Chain) we are earning below Par.

Recognize the position you are in and the consistent short falls in the goals. Take the hint, let someone better manage it.

I have been working at Newell Rubbermaid full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Talent- there are a lot of amazing and talented people working for this company.

    Cons

    • Slow (no) growth. Inconsistent career opportunity from department to department- certain departments flourish, others are completely flat.
    • Weak business strategy- leadership team makes many short sighted decisions to deliver short term gains (the annual sales goal), with little to no long term benefit.
    • Lack of discipline and focus- the leadership team has lost the ability to prioritize opportunities and focus resources. Instead, they chase after everything, stretching resources way too thin.
    • CONSTANT restructuring for certain teams (ie the brand team). Very few people stay in the role for more than a year, 2 years at most.
    • Choking on process. The corporate structure has overly complicated just about every process with formality and inefficient tools (aimed at "saving money"). in some cases, it takes HOURS to get something done that was once a 5 minute task. Painfully over complicated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving people around. Keep people in a role for more than a year. if you MUST move people around, make sure to transfer the knowledge. Stop chasing EVERY sales opportunity and prioritize your business objectives- maintain disciplined to the plan. Start recognizing your strong talent and make an effort to retain it. A LOT of strong talent has been lost over the past 6-12 months.
