Former Employee - Engineer in Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)
Former Employee - Engineer in Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)

I worked at Nexen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Great training opportunities, not budget driven
    2. Great people to work with
    3. Small company atmosphere
    4. Good corporate values and intention to pursue them

    Cons

Company suffering because of long lake. Company has good values but struggles on business front. No definite career path, often ad-hoc. Not production oriented or agressive in pursuing business objectives. Long lake is perhaps the plant in Alberta that suffers the highest number of power failures every year, no focus on reliability. Site management pays more attention to consultants??

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think different.... consultants (Shell) do not own your plant, your employees own it. Empower them and make the environment they can deliver their best. Dig deep to understand why people are so busy yet not very productive. Fix maintenance at LLK, can't understand why mgmnt can't see the disfunction. If flyin/flyout really solves operator attrition, why hesitate to implement? At first, you are here to do business ( in a safe and responsible way) and not to express your love for community. The 'community' will love people coming to Fort McMurray because when the communiti-ian leaves Fort McMurray, he will get higher price for his/her house!

Current Employee - Technical in Uxbridge, England (UK)
Current Employee - Technical in Uxbridge, England (UK)

I have been working at Nexen

    Pros

    Work with technically-focussed people
Opportunities to take on a lot of resposibility
    High exposure to senior management

    Cons

Can be time-pressured in some teams, meaning that technical work can be sacrificed, for example, to meet rig schedule. Management can sometimes demand answers without sufficient time allocated for the technical work behind the answer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your technical people do the technical work required to get the best answer.
