I worked at Nokia full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

The comments below are more indicative of "Old Nokia". "New Nokia" nowadays is a different company and may not have these Pros:
1. Great culture. Respect for individual.
2. Great personal development opportunities
3. Great benefits and work life balance, flexi-hours.

Cons

1. Pay is average or low (depending on who you work for). The pay difference can be a big gap sometimes even for people who worked for years there.
2. Company is now going through major reorganization to downsize to a smaller, more efficient company to survive. This is a good thing for the company, but definitely not a great thing for individuals as benefits get taken away, people get outsourced, or have to do multiple person's job. Huge uncertainty with the company's future.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

1. I understand the need to downsize and improve efficiency to survive. However, do work hard to keep the culture alive. Don't forget motivating the remaining troops as I can imagine they are thoroughly demoralized after all these changes.
2. In terms of products, what we have said for years - keep it simple. Don't release so many different models of slightly +/- features. Make one really BEST OF THE BEST hero product. Make one mid level product, and one low end phone. That's it. Keep it simple for consumers. Don't skimp on specs for the hero phone, because your consumers will never forgive you.
3. Think of a contingency plan. Microsoft WP is not taking off as quickly. You can secretly plan for Android without telling to the whole world.
4. Protect Lumia's niche in Photography. Make the top range Lumia to be the BEST in photography and video across ALL camera phones. Don't ever give ground on this.
5. Start working on flexible display phones. When Samsung come out with this FIRST, it's going to hurt your market share.
6. Start working on a light weight tablet if you have not done so. Windows 8 tablets are a failure so far... you need to think of what to bring to the table. Current RT tabs are too useless, and full Win8 tablets are too heavy or lack battery life. You may need to find a creative way to get around these limitations.
7. Value your employees, especially those who have talents. In the past, the talent retention programs are a joke. When retrenchment came, you wield a broad axe and chopped indiscriminately. This cannot go on. It will hurt your long term survivability and you will find it hard to attract talents.
8. Focus deeply on cost cutting equality. In the past, some departments will work hard to cut cost, while some individuals or departments would squander money like water. Make sure the middle and top management are fully accountable for cost spendings like travel. Make sure every trip is really necessary before approving.

    I have been working at Nokia as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

    There are a huge amount of talented and passionate people to work with at Nokia and the company is truly doing cutting edge work in some areas.

    Cons

    The company has too much bureaucracy and too many older middle managers who seem to have side-stepped the restructuring and provide little value to the company.

    Cut through the bureaucracy and get rid of the dead wood once and for all.

    Ability to move between different divisions and competencies

    Historically Global-level culture allowed for too much democracy: recent refocusing has definitely improved prioritisation and accountability

    Listen to the country teams, and reduce the second guessing.
