Unprofessional, go-nowhere company

Pros

Compensation wasn't bad considering how little work was expected of me. People are generally friendly. Dress is very casual. It's a comfortable environment if you don't want to be challenged or make a difference.

Cons

Highly unprofessional leadership from the top, which is unfortunately too transparent. It's so small that it's claustrophobic--if you don't get along with the people in your immediate vicinity, you're unlikely to do well (ie, politics is an issue). Management can be really incompetent at times (for example, the website launch was completely bungled).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just quit. The company has outlived its usefulness. In lieu of that, I would recommend trying to value competence in employees instead of social standing.

Kind of a personality cult, actually

    Pros

Feels like your on a mission. Feels like you are giving back to your community. Flexibility with work schedule is very nice too.

    Cons

Pay is horrendous, especially for the Bay Area. Upper management tries to convince you that "everyone's input is valued," but it's certainly not and it's very top-down, heirarchal. The founder (who had retired and came back), Jake "Ralph" Warner, wants to do all sorts of things, but doesn't understand why he has to spend money on the people and technology that can get them done. He's convinced he can save Nolo from failing, but the numbers say otherwise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start hiring people, rather than promoting from within. You keep promoting people into positions they have no experience in (probably because you can't hire for the amount of money you pay).

    Pros

It's very rewarding to work for a small private company that has a positive mission who's focus is on producing quality products which have a positive social impact.

    Cons

Small company with limited professional growth and limited resources for compensating it's employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review your benefits package, it is really sub-standard.
