I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Career growth, commission based, mentors, fun atmosphere, incentives to sell more and create your own business

    Cons

Slower seasons, having to toot your own horn to get recognized and promoted. Managers sometimes have a better than thou mentality and do not show that they truly care about their employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand what motivates and drives your employees, treat everyone with respect and don't talk down to them or assume they understand things you have not explained to them thoroughly. Let them know your success depends on them and treat them in accordance to this. Make them feel pride and ownership over the department by treating them as equals and help them to succeed and reach their goals in the company. They will not care about the department and conduct themselves to the Nordstrom standard if they do not feel appreciated and valued, and if you do not take the time to make them feel that way.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people and generally a fun, safe, and supportive work environment. You can make a lot of money as a Department Manager if you sell a lot and have increases for your department monthly. There are a lot of truly caring and talented people. For the most part, most people want others to succeed. If you work hard and smart, you can make great money and have a very fulfilling career.

    Cons

Cons really only have to do with retail in general. Holidays are impossible to enjoy with loved ones. Also, if anything in your personal life (weddings, birthdays, graduations) falls during holiday or a sale, it is difficult to get the time off. You might get the time off, but not without a lot of guilt. Again, this is true of retail in general not only Nordstrom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time on the floor with your people and customers.
