Pros

In addition to your hourly wage you can make commission on your sales if you meet the goals for the department you work in. You receive an employee discount on all purchases.

Cons

You need to develop personal customers if you don't want to compete with other reps in your department for sales.

    No work/life balance
Expect you to work long hours
Want you to be on the sales floor most of the day leaving you no time for office work. Expect you to arrive early or leave after your 8th hour in order to get things done
In order to move up in the company you have to be mobile
Cannot take time off June-August due to sales
Negative environment- most employees seem dissatisfied

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees and appreciate their hardwork
Focus on the positive, not always on the negative
    Promote work/life balance.
Lack of mobility should not hinder someone's ability to move up in the company.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You have the ability to make as much as you want. Everything is commission based, and during seasonal peaks paychecks can be HUGE. Typically managers are flexible and there is tons of room for internal promotion within the company.

    Cons

If you do not make your sales goals, you can get fired. There is not really a ton of job security if you are not willing to work for it. During seasonal peaks, expect to work long hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reach out to employees more. They may not always be willing to discuss their gripes about their manager with you.
