I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Employee discount (20% or 33% for managers and high volume sales people), vacation time (although its only ok to take it in select months April, October and January) , holiday pay (select holidays)

    Cons

No flexibility in scheduling, no time off during sales, events (that happen about every 2 weeks) or holidays (Memorial day, all of July, November and December). Horrible working conditions. Assistant manager is rude and unprofessional. HR is not there for employees. Store manager is cheap, never have live music, live flowers, supplies in employee lounge and they don't turn on the AC until after 9:45am even in the dead of summer. Sales per hour goals are ridiculous. Lot of drama on the sales floor. Oh and if you plan on moving up in the company, get ready to feast on the kool-aid and be willing to move to whatever shithole (sometimes across country) they want to send you to or all future doors are closed!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a PROFESSIONAL. Make sure your assistants are being PROFESSIONAL. It is considered harassment to insult, demean or belittle your employees.

Proud to have worked there, but they were not flexible toward a quality of life outside of work.

    Pros

    Brand recognition. Everyone loves Nordstrom.

    Cons

Very competitive atmosphere that tends to lend employees' to gravitate toward cliques that are not welcoming to newcomers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not promise things you can't deliver just to get someone hired. For instance, I was promised flexibility to go back to school. Yet come the time to return, my department manager was not willing to give a set schedule for me to make it to class.
