Not the best, but not the worst.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Palo Alto, CA
Former Employee - Sales Associate in Palo Alto, CA

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (less than a year)

Pros

- Employee shop day/discount.
- Being able to see/get your hands on all the latest trends and merchandise first.
- With a commission-based salary, your paycheck reflects how hard you work; you reap what you sow.

Cons

- As with any retail job, the competitive nature of sales can get the better of you over time.
- Customer returns are taken directly out of your paycheck.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although meeting goals and "making the numbers" are what the industry of retail is all about, please make more of an effort to at least pretend like you care about your employees.

    Former Employee - Customer Service

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Pay is decent for not having any formal education
-Some supervisors are nice and helpful
-They feed you during special events (sale times, holidays, etc.)
-Sometimes they have raffles or opportunities to get free gift cards

    Cons

-Job is very stressful; give outstanding customer service but keeping talk time short
-Some supervisors are not willing to help you and are unapproachable or just don't know the answers to your question
-Moving up is not based on knowledge or efficiency but more so on "quality"
-You need to schedule your time off at least 6 weeks ahead of time
-You could be working until midnight even if there are no calls coming through

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the front-line (lower level) employees who are actually doing the work. Don't make transformational changes without getting the employees' support; you will face retaliation and a lot of people quitting. Mgmt 101.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits, 401k. dental, vision.

    Cons

Customer service USED to be Nordstroms number one priority, however, over the years they've greatly lost sight of that. They are focused on hiring pushy sales people. They are letting go of good quality employees who have been there for a long time and give outstanding service simply because they aren't selling enough per hour. So out with the old and in with the new, who they pay less. Customers notice and they don't like it. Its always one event after the next and constant preselling. Its definitely not what it used to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just converse with your employees to scold them when they don't make their numbers. Try giving a few words of encouragement or maybe an "atta' boy" every now and then. And motivate with incentive and reward, not fear and intimidation and threats.
