Not the best, but not the worst.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Palo Alto, CA

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (less than an year)

Pros

- Employee shop day/discount.
- Being able to see/get your hands on all the latest trends and merchandise first.
- With a commission-based salary, your paycheck reflects how hard you work; you reap what you sow.

Cons

- As with any retail job, the competitive nature of sales can get the better of you over time.
- Customer returns are taken directly out of your paycheck.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although meeting goals and "making the numbers" are what the industry of retail is all about, please make more of an effort to at least pretend like you care about your employees.

    Pros

Great coffee, high quality work environment, great HR, great benefits. Fantastic teams. Nice discount. Given an opportunity that I never saw coming and I made the most of it. Education was readily available and there are more resources available to employees if they just ask and look deeply into the mynordstrom.com service.

    Cons

People promoted too quickly on the sales floor - not all sales people are great managers. After working on the sales floor then in corporate, there is a big difference in how people are treated. Floor managers rarely smile. Hard to coach bad apples out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to personally invest in your people.
