I have been working at Nordstrom

Pros

-Commission, (which can be good and bad)
-Ability to be promoted is good
-Interaction with customers is good.
-It is a very solid company

Cons

-Hard work!
-Hours were difficult sometimes
-A slow week can bring a very bad paycheck, no matter how good you are.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good, but very political. It is a lot of who you know, but if you perform well, you will get promoted

I have been working at Nordstrom

    Pros

    Great benefits.
    Discount.
    Nice customers.
    Beautiful store environment.

    Cons

Store manager and many department extremely cliquish. No flexibility in terms of scheduling. After the training period, the honeymoon is over and they treat you like an indentured servant. I don't think store manager or most of the department managers know the first thing about managing people, listening, motivating and showing appreciation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you learned to lead in a positive manner your turnover would drastically decrease AND you would see greater top line results.

    I worked at Nordstrom

    Pros

No long hours on sales floor, flexible schedule, good benefits

    Cons

Some managers show favortism. They rank you on the schedule. If you keep getting the not so good schedule, how are you supposed to move up to get the good selling hours. Each employee should get basically the same schedule. If you rotate everyone, then everyone will be there during peak selling hours and non-peak selling hours. Then everyone can succeed instead of just a handful of employees. I am a former employee. I was let go in January of 09. I was told I would be called back to work when sales picked up. I still have not heard back from them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop showing favortism. This creates a hostile work environment. If everyone is treated the same you will have happy, productive employees!
