I worked at North Carolina State University full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The benefits are good and the university is large and interesting. I like the area and enjoy having the restaurants and cafeteria options for lunch.

Cons

There is too much bureaucracy and red tape. Departments are isolationist and the pay is only so-so. Parking is terrible. It is not a very attractive university and the traffic is frustrating. Many of the buildings are old and need updated.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to lower grade staff, raise the pay, allow more communication, update the buildings, and promote advancement and growth.

Former Employee - Scientist (Non-faculty) in Raleigh, NC

I worked at North Carolina State University full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great flexibility and autonomy. If you're a faculty member, it's pretty good. If you're a professional, non-faculty employee, it can also be good. Lots of vacation time. I don't know about regular staff.

    Cons

Salary is below market. Recognition of doing a good job is non existent. Leadership from department to department is highly variable. Some department/unit heads have no management training or experience. This creates undesirable results

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize star performers better, find more incentives for employees. Require management training before promoting to dept./unit head.

I worked at North Carolina State University as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Knowledgeable, helpful faculty. Interesting research topics with a strong focus on getting to know other interns and what their research projects are about.

    Cons

Most work is done individually or in small groups, larger groups are rare. Amount of work varies greatly depending on research topic/mentor.
