Former Employee - International Programs  in  Boston, MA
Former Employee - International Programs in Boston, MA

Pros

Collegues are wonderful if you can get to know them. Extremely capable and creative colleagues. Cutting edge programming. Opportunity to be in the trenches and learn. Ambitious goals.

Cons

Toxic work environment. Attrition rate over the top. No continuity. No faith in leadership to make changes to retain talent until too late.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow at reasonable and competitive pace and retain your top talent. Listen to your staff and push back at the unreasonable project timelines imposed by disconnected leadership. Compensate appropriately and close the gap between salaries of leadership and mid-level managers. Manage out the sources of the toxicity and change the culture so that people want to stay.

Current Employee - Research Associate in Boston, MA

    Pros

    Flexible hours and excellent location
Self-directed work schedule and creative direction
    Publication potential and conference travel
Academic environment encourages learning and improvement
    IT support is excellent
Close proximity to Computer Science department for talks and colloquia

    Cons

Very underpaid relative to my peers in my field (software engineering)
    Benefits package very underwhelming
No time off in the first year, must accrue over time
No retirement matching until after a full year
Very small project team with intermittent drive-by supervision

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reconsider your benefits package, particularly for software professionals in your research labs, even ones that are grant-funded. Promote bicycle commuting to campus by adding covered, secured parking and better bicycle access across the orange line to the SW corridor bicycle path.
