Pros

Relative to other places to work in Vermont, Northern Power is great. It's probably the best employer in Central Vermont. Good benefits, good pay, friendly people, lots of stuff going on. A really interesting place to work. And it feels good working in alternative energy.

Cons

Wind isn't doing great as an industry. Money is tight and management is sometimes penny wise but pound foolish. Management doesn't necessarily have the technical acumen to really understand what's going on, which is unfortunate because the products are so high-tech and cutting-edge. Office politics can be an issue. Promotions can be based on seniority more than merit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer promotions on merit, not seniority. Spend a little more on stuff that matters and a little less on pompous executives.

Challenging place to work where there was absolutely no training program or process to get new employees up to speed.

I worked at Northern Power Systems

    Pros

They manufacture a very good product that is attractive, reliable and fills a gap for renewable energy in many locations in and out of the US.

    Cons

Management a bit out of touch with day to day employees. Seemed more concerned about the cars they drive and the vacations they take instead of figuring out how to solve problems. Micro management from top management into the day to day operations. No real leadership taking place. Management only looks after themselves. Reminds me of high school mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the revolving door. Many good people left because of poor management and lack of leadership. Know they know this from talking to those that have left. It is a shame they have the ability to fix problems but neglect to do so, so long as they get paid large salaries to do nothing. Listen to the folks that are closest to the customer and then take that information and lead the company. Show employees you can be trusted.

I worked at Northern Power Systems full-time

    Pros

    Nice People
    Casual but Hard-Working Atmosphere
    Decent Benefits

    Cons

Job Stability/Growth - company has potential to be a huge success but until then, it job security is a little tough. Due to the nature of this industry, the company is mostly men. Due to the location of the company, most are very into skiing, biking, climbing etc. - sort of a boys' club atmosphere. Not rude or crude at all, just sporty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep working on the innovation and you will stay ahead of the competition. Protect your talent - you have some incredibly bright people in your organization.
