I have been working at Northern Trust

Pros

Benefits and time off are fairly decent. Opportunities to take classes offered by company in various subjects if you want.

Cons

Technology very outdated, servers crash often. Jobs at the fund center very monotonous and not a lot of growth opportunity. Pay and bonus very very low compared to industry. Lots of people content to stay in same position, no passion. Very unmotivated middle management, like to have a lot of pointless meetings just to seem productive. Lots of micro managing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more, motivate people, hire qualified people. Focus less on having meetings about meetings. Update the technology so productivity isn't hampered.

    Pros

Work life balance- be prepared to work strictly 8 hours per day but expect ZERO for bonus regardless of your efforts and process improvements.

    Cons

ork life balance- be prepared to work strictly 8 hours per day but expect ZERO for bonus regardless of your efforts and process improvements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become a performance based culture where bonuses reflect your abilities and process improvement. Rick Wadell claims he took no bonus and cuts 700 people however is at +12.5mm TOTAL comp...it's in the details...

Ignorance to shareholders and also ZERO sense of family at the office. You will be nothing but 1 of 14,000 employees and they remind you of this often as you will go months without interacting with your manager and receiving feedback and job progression conversations...

Human Resources dictates everything here and plays too much of a role in day to day operations as opposed to relying on management to make informed decisions. If you are looking for a role where you will receive decent benefits, your salary with maybe a 1% bonus and lack or progression this is the place for you...if you are motivated to increase productivity and inefficiencies and would like a bonus more than 1% look elsewhere. HORRIBLE shop and remember that you will never receive a bonus or raise... DO NOT APPLY!!!

    I worked at Northern Trust

    Pros

    Work/life balance is very good.
Many of the employees are very good to work with. Doesn't mean they know what they are doing.

    Cons

15 years ago there was Employee stock ownership plan, pension, 401(k) with matching, profit sharing and low pay. Now, no ESOP, no profit sharing, 401(k) matching has been decreased, pension has been decreased and still low pay. There is no reason to work there unless you don't want to be held accountable for anything. Employee moral is at rock bottom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management is telling employees to work harder and they will not be getting raises or bonuses for their harder work. Meanwhile, Mr. Waddell gets a 12% increase in compensation. I'm not sure what universe management lives in but it is not reality. Management doesn't know how to increase revenue so they are asking employees for answers.
