Current Employee - Vice President in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Northern Trust full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Good People, Work Life Balance, Stable, Low Turnover rate. Was once a great place to work, now it's only average.

Cons

Senior management is clueless, does not listen to their staff, and is more likely to have knee jerk reaction than to address the real problems. They've outsourced too much and a lot of knowledge with it.
Keeps reducing benefits year after year and shows the employees that the company no longer cares about them any more.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit outsourcing. Hire talented people, invest in the staff and show them you care again.

It was a great place to work in the 80's & 90's, but as management changed, so did the company, and not for the better.

I worked at Northern Trust full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and pay, and a good choice for customers or investors. The company still has some good managers, who actually manage, mentor, and support their staff, work in a compromising way with other departments, and who try to do the right thing for the company, their employees and the client.

    Cons

Women were considered an asset in the 80's & 90's, but the company has fallen back to the good old boy network. Upper management brought in from the outside are concerned for their own jobs and not the jobs of the employees. The company used to have a more family-oriented feel to it, but it's now more of a dog-eat-dog environment. Outsourcing has replaced many employees, and one needs to continually watch their back for backstabbing management. No oversight to ensure management treats employees respectfully or fairly. Maybe the bank has just grown too large - sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire HR consultants that are their to not simply protect the bank for EEOC violations, but who work to ensure Managers are treating employees fairly, respectfully, and providing the proper training and support. While the client is extremely important, don't forget that a good employee is equally as important. Make sure employees can speak up with their viewpoints without being subject to a backlash from their manager simply because the employee is not just a "yes" man. One would think that managers would be open to ideas and criticisms equally, and be truly ready to liste
