It was a great place to work in the 80's & 90's, but as management changed, so did the company, and not for the better.

    Pros

Good benefits and pay, and a good choice for customers or investors. The company still has some good managers, who actually manage, mentor, and support their staff, work in a compromising way with other departments, and who try to do the right thing for the company, their employees and the client.

    Cons

Women were considered an asset in the 80's & 90's, but the company has fallen back to the good old boy network. Upper management brought in from the outside are concerned for their own jobs and not the jobs of the employees. The company used to have a more family-oriented feel to it, but it's now more of a dog-eat-dog environment. Outsourcing has replaced many employees, and one needs to continually watch their back for backstabbing management. No oversight to ensure management treats employees respectfully or fairly. Maybe the bank has just grown too large - sad.

    Advice to Management

Hire HR consultants that are their to not simply protect the bank for EEOC violations, but who work to ensure Managers are treating employees fairly, respectfully, and providing the proper training and support. While the client is extremely important, don't forget that a good employee is equally as important. Make sure employees can speak up with their viewpoints without being subject to a backlash from their manager simply because the employee is not just a "yes" man. One would think that managers would be open to ideas and criticisms equally, and be truly ready to liste

    Pros

Powerful brand recognition among target audience. Sterling reputation in volatile markets. Conservative balance sheet has kept the bank strong and solvent.

    Cons

Culture emphasizes compliance over initiative and innovation. Technology is many iterations behind the times and remains siloed.

    Advice to Management

Involve line managers in decision making. Reduce reliance on lower paid, lower skilled workers. Pay above market for talent. Reduce the number of meetings discussing "strategy" and spend more time problem-solving to improve business processing and client-onboarding.
