I worked at Northern Trust full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

I worked for TNT for over 15 years and developed many friendships. Most of the people there are great people.

Cons

Management doesn't care about employees any more. They only care about shareholders. Benefits have been greatly reduced in the last 10 years. Everything is about cutting expenses, cutting expenses, cutting expenses. A lot of dead weight at Northern. If you want a job where you don't want accountablility then Northern is the place. The good workers have to make up for the dead wieght and get burnt out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about your people, not about yourself and shareholders. Your people are the ones that are the company. Make people accountable.

I have been working at Northern Trust full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Work life balance
Good place for semi-retirement if that's what you want
Good place if you are willing to leverage your connections to big money
Its conservativeness will keep it out of big trouble but also miss big opportunities

    Cons

    Highly political
Must be a networking cheerleader to succeed
    Very PC
Consensus style drives very slow decision making
    Challenging established thinking is punished
Management is out of touch with the market and the workers
Pay is low relative to the market but they don't ask for much either
Mediocrity is abundant -no surprise given the rest
Avoid if you are ambitious or action-oriented

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead by example -take your cuts first
