I worked at Northern Trust full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a really nice place to work. Especially if you are in the HR department. The learning capability is unlimited

    Cons

Working with some individuals in upper management on a daily basis who will turn and walk the other to avoid a simple "hello".

I worked at Northern Trust as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

IT workers are compensated well, in line with large financial organizations. Promotions are awarded based on merit more often than politics. Downtown "Chicago loop" locations are convenient for commuters.

    Cons

Like many financial organizations, they continue to dwell in the past, using 1980's era waterfall processes rather than modern Agile methods. Application Development Managers are sometimes non-technical, and development teams lack leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get over the "promote from within" limitation and open manager spots to allow employees to compete with outside workers. Perform a corporate-wide Agile conversion ASAP, it is the current industry best practice, and performs much better than waterfall in highly regulated industries like banking and trading. Be sure to bring in experienced Agile contractors and permanent workers, Agile requires experience.
