There is lot's of room for advancement, everyone is a team players, plenty of training to get you going to get the job done in a timely sufficient matter that is beneficiary to the company.

Cons

You get the experience you need, to advance to a higher level, nice compensation, plenty of overtime

Advice to Management

When a new employee comes in for contract position another contracted person shouldn't be the one to train them, and they should give them a chance, at least the minimum of 30 days

    Pros

    Decent pay, prestigious titles, experience

    Cons

Inadequate training, token diversity, covert racism, phony colleagues

    Advice to Management

Invest time in proper training and maybe you will see a better return on the TRILLIONS of temps you rely on to make your company go round. Also, it's not smart to stick new hires with idiots who don't know how to train. Not everyone can train/teach. On my 1st day of training, the idiot who was training me was surprised to know that he was even going to have to train me.

I was hired as an OTC Derivatives Analyst, and the NEXT DAY was switched to PIMCO analysis. To put it simply, this wasn't a real analysis position. It was simply a complex data entry position and nothing more. Northern Trust does an excellent job of putting lipstick on pigs when it comes to job titles and job details. If they actually invested in proper software that actually received and managed data properly, the position wouldn't even exist, or at the least would probably be sent off to Bangalore, India.

  2. People-Centric Work Environment, but Ongoing Challenges to Transform

    Pros

The company prides itself in being people-centric (strong benefits package), both in its fiduciary relationship with clients as well as with its employees, or partners, internally. Most managers are comfortable providing flexible work options, depending on team deliverables. Several avenues for networking and career development, but only for those who can establish the right network. Internal mobility is common and widely supported by managers who have themselves benefited from working across functional areas.

    Cons

Similar to the rest of the industry Northern Trust has been pushing large change initiatives to reduce expenses and raise revenues. Lack of funding in budgets has limited opportunities for internal mobility and flatlined growth in most partners salary despite increased responsibilities and volume. Change provides opportunities for individuals eager to enhance the company, but challenges the status quo that many partners benefit from due to skills or networks they've developed over 20+ years in the company. Many decisions get made (or swayed) by personality or relationship of senior stakeholders despite effort put into group analysis and discussion.

    Advice to Management

Current performance rating metrics (1-5 system) too easily blend mediocrity with high performance, making it easier for managers to equally reward team members, despite potentially huge discrepancies in productivity. Internal culture is being strained or clashing with cross functional projects/programs, and in many cases the culture key managers have mastered, is a huge impediment to effective change, one frequent example being managers across business units avoiding decisions due to conflict aversion, while pursuing their own agenda.
