Brilliant people, inherently ineffective culture

Chief Technology Officer (Former Employee) Los Angeles, CA

ProsNorthrop Grumman has an amazing heritage, and it is a company that I felt proud working for. Many of the people I worked with or worked around were very intelligent.

ConsThe world of government contracting is not conducive to running a real business in my opinion. A company whose revenue primarily comes from the federal government (approximately 98% for Northrop Grumman) is one in which the federal government effectively dictates prices, schedules, profits, and headcount. Add the corruption within senior government officials and political parties to the mix, and you have a 'business' environment that isn't business-like at all. The ebbs and flows of government contracts put tenured employees at risk on a regular basis, and due to the fact that each contract is its own business, over which Northrop Grumman acts as a logical umbrella with shared back-office services, this means that the business model cannot support a bench of employees between contracts.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not succumb to the power that is implied by working in a big office with big customers and big secrets. Default to an open approach to information and communication instead of a default which is closed and secret (except where legally necessary of course). Measure your leaders based on their ability to execute and their ability to lead and create teams that consistently execute. Do not stand for employees who are ineffective, no matter how long they've been working there.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
