Northrop Grumman is a Good Company for Engineers

Engineer (Former Employee) Palmdale, CA

Pros- Pretty easy to stand out
- Lots of career opportunities
- Very good locations
- Excellent work/life balance (not much night shift)
- It's pretty hard to lose your job there
- Bleeding Edge product offerings

Cons- Way too many layers of management
- Way too many managers at each level
- Management Oversight is too high on contract proposals; NG can't compete well as a result
- Transferring out of a department is difficult if you don't have someone pulling you
- It's better to look good than to be good
- Raises are the same whether you're Extremely Effective or Extremely Ineffective
- They lag upgrading personal workstations (For instance, I was upgraded from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 long after Windows XP was available)

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease consider process improvement initiatives for the support functions - not just manufacturing. The true opportunities for cutting costs exists in evaluating what is really necessary to support your shop floor. Keep a watchful eye on management's "Empire Building".
