I have been working at Northrop Grumman full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance, you just do your 9 hours and go home. Unless there's a deadline, you won't work overtime very often. Friendly coworkers.

    Cons

Extremely low pay for your experience level. Management has cut the pay raises for the last 2 years for "budget reasons", so after 2-3 years your salary is far below the industry average. Upper/middle management is very poor. They wonder why our annual engagement (i.e. employee morale) surveys are so low each year, but then cut our raises and have no incentive in place for hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to actually keep your talented people, then PAY them what they're worth. After years of working hard to only get a microscopic raise each year, people will either leave for better paying work, or get demotivated and just work really lazily. And enough with trying to blow smoke to your employees by telling them that a 2% raise is actually "very good"

I worked at Northrop Grumman full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It was great working on military aircraft systems quality control before it was installed.
The oldest projects Did want to expend for much process, getting a CMMI or ISO 9001 certification. That fulfilled my goal of being an efficiency expert as in Cheaper By the Dozen, the original novel, not the Steve Martin movies. All QAs should read it.
On the later project, the week-long formal test sessions in Pax River Naval Air Station and Bethpage, Long Island were great. Long Island is beautiful, you have got to see it.

    Cons

The last project did Not want to expend for much process, let alone getting a CMMI or ISO 9001 certification.
Some of our offices had their restrooms and cafeteria in the attached factory buildings.
With Sequestration and budget cuts, defense contractors face an uncertain future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As the 2 (or few) remaining men-only old colleges say:
"The student will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do."
The other code is that of gentlemanly behavior, which states "The student will behave as a gentleman at all times and in all places."
No further detailed ethics or behavioral rules.
Engineering schools could see the results and adopt these codes.
