I have been working at Northwestern Medicine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful, clean, well-maintained hospital. Average age of nurses employed tends to be younger, in their 20s-30s. Many nurses are continuing their education and in school for CRNAs or Nurse Practitioner, so the nurses are very smart. Great co-workers.

    Cons

Lowest paying hospital in Chicago. Nurses have very little room for raises. Huge cutbacks with regard to orientation period for new nurses: no matter your experience you only have a 3 week orientation. High nurse turnover. Constantly changing managerial model. I now have 5 different managers, and have no idea who they are and vice versa. NMH spends all their money on making the hospital beautiful, but does not compensate their hardworking nurses accordingly.

    Advice to Management

Pay your nurses more. Go back to the old managerial model: 1 nurse manager per each nursing unit. Increase orientation time for newly hired nurses: a 3-week orientation is creating an unsafe work environment with lower patient satisfaction scores. What happen "Patients First?" It seems like it's more about "Budget First."
