Current Employee - Associate Financial Advisor in Dallas, TX

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Many aspects of the job are negotiable: salary, hours, bonuses. The company is good and the training available is also good.

Cons

In the area of support, growth potential is limited. If you work as a registered sales rep, growth potential is unlimited.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Other interns were supportive and friendly

    Cons

Not worth doing for an internship, it is based 100% on commission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the interns to shadow the full time reps.

  2.

Not a great place to start for a new grad.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule, comprehensive training, great work environment.

    Cons

First of all, don't be too excited if you get an interview, or even an offer from NWM. They will literally take anyone who has any type of college education.
Commission sucks... tough to make any money in your first 1-5 years with the company.
When it comes down to it, this company is full of sales people. They are great with their words and they really sold me on the idea that I could make a lot of money selling insurance. But you have to be realistic and remember that (for the most part), people with life insurance don't need it, and people without it don't want it. It's a tough place to start, especially when you have student loans that need to be repaid. You don't get any kind of guaranteed compensation and even in the best circumstances (for instance, if you sell 20 lives in the first year), you still won't make enough to keep up with your bills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Throw in some guaranteed compensation for your young grads and you might be able to keep some of them around.
