Pros

Independence, unlimited income potential, helping people achieve their financial goals, great company values, management is truly interested in helping you unlock your potential

Cons

No base salary, pay for your own expenses, must be able to deal with the rejection and people with no sense of urgency, and can get monotonous at times

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

At northwestern you have a continual opportunity for personal growth. Constantly challenge your self to improve your processes while helping other accomplish what they need to do.

    Cons

The work described from recruiters is miniimized compared to the real challenges. You become an independent agent, solely reliant on commission sales to sustain your self.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help people with their mental road blocks and problems in practices rather than repeating expectations for performance numbers.

Former Intern - Anonymous Intern in Chapel Hill, NC

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Paid well compared to other internship positions, but not compensatory enough for the work. Definitely learned how to put up with unfriendly and self-serving people in an office environment.

    Cons

The internship program is just a way for NWM to get more clients and make more money-- if you don't already know 20 possible leads when you arrive you are considered useless. If you do have the leads and can make your family friends buy insurance products, you will be very successful. The managing director used his fraternity connections to fulfill that purpose. Not a good office to work for if you are a woman or a minority-- the office is like a frat house for 20-30 somethings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using interns to make money and actually teach them something. You lure interns in with good looking job responsibilities only to completely disregard them once they start working.
