Pros

Good work environment and culture
Business principles - Quality, Integrity, Unity
Global firm with multicultural experience

Cons

Gap between principles Theory and actual Practice
Administratively, classic safe haven where managers hide from responsibility and avoid
being held accountable for errors of judgement or problems they created or failed to solve.
Poor HR - people are not important

Advice to ManagementAdvice

1) evaluate theory and practice in individual offices for business principles and best practice
2) understanding of ground zero team

Great opportunities for associates; less so for staff.

    Former Employee - Associate Attorney
    Former Employee - Associate Attorney

I worked at Norton Rose full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The firm offers great opportunities for young attorneys. The practice is about as demanding as average in a big firm, but because of locations world-wide and connections within local communities, there are experiences available to young attorneys (e.g., working abroad, using legal skills to contribute to the community, taking small cases to trial, working for unusual clients) that would not be available at some other firms.

    Cons

Associate experience there is a mixed bag. Some partners are extremely difficult to work with and others are fantastic. The associate pay scale begins at the same place as other similar firms, but senior associates should generally expect lower pay than their peers at other large firms.
The focus in recent years has turned to minimizing non-attorney staff, so unless a particular employee has a partner championing them, their work environment and job security are limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value non-attorney staff, as they can make the attorney's work product and firm experience much better if they're happy. If you'd like to see associate retention, give partners education in management techniques and mentoring. Whether intentional or not the firm as a whole relies on scare tactics to keep associates and non-attorney staff motivated, but it would be better served to create a friendlier work environment.
