I worked at Norwegian Cruise Line full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Fun itineraries (if you get on the right ship), working with a diverse group of people from all over the world, Could enjoy yourself on the ship after work hours and actually mingle with guests and have fun so it didn't always feel like a work-only environment. Also, the IT salary was pretty competitive for the Cruising industry,

Cons

Like any cruise line, for IT, the positions are limited and the opportunity to move up are even more limited. Once you learn the shipboard environment there isn't much opportunity to expand your knowledge-base beyond that while on contract, so it can feel a bit like you're stuck in a dead end job once you've been there a few years. Also, like any cruise line, if you want to move up the ladder in IT then you will need to live near their corporate headquarters in FL, assuming there is an open position available.

A major Con for IT is that with all the ships that NCL has, they still have a limited shoreside IT staff that supports ships and the IT budget for ships is severely lacking which affects shipboard IT operation when it comes to parts and repairs and ultimately effects the onboard working environment.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more consideration to your shipboard IT teams, be a bit more generous with the IT budget so the onboard teams can better do their jobs which, in turn, will help the different departments provide a better guest experience.

    Pros

party, drink, travel, meet international friends, work interesting shows.

    Cons

work under incompetent management, submit to egotistical leadership no matter the cost.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

understand and ask your employees more, they are very good at what they do and are boots on the ground all of the time, they know what people like and want

    Pros

A lot of really good people work for NCL

    Cons

VP and above are cut off from the people who are working below. It's as if everyone else is supposed to check their brains at the door. Once inside it is very difficult to get a raise, salaries are not competitive in my field.

Look around, you are the solution and the problem
