I have been working at Notre Dame full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

The university has first-rate resources across the board for teaching, research, and recreation. Students are generally a pleasure to teach, mature and hard working. I've grown to like living in northern Indiana, proximity to Lake Michigan and Chicago.

Cons

While ND's strong sense of tradition has many advantages, it can also make the university feel insular, and making changes that buck the system require a lot of patience.

I have been working at Notre Dame full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you have children, the education benefit is great. The retirement benefits are also extremely competitive.

    Cons

The salaries are very low. They are not competitive with other organizations in the area and the University has the mentality that it is a "non-profit," so they are not able to pay what other "for-profit" organizations pay and that you should just feel lucky to work there. The University does not do a good job of recognizing hard work. The pay increases are likely to stay low as the University has finally recognized that it cannot continue to raise tuition costs at such a rapid rate. There is very little flexibility as far as work schedule.

I worked at Notre Dame part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You can get into just about any field you want with Notre Dame. The university setting allows for nearly any profession to find a niche.

    Cons

Dealing with the red tape of any higher education institution is always frustrating.

    Advice to Management

    Keep on keeping on.
