I have been working at Novartis Animal Health US

Pros

The culture (excluding upper management) is very team-oriented and friendly. The products are exceptional and the pay and benefits are good, especially for the area. There is availability to move up, but primarily if you want to live outside of the US.

Cons

The Upper Management is not good at communicating and many do not fight for their co-workers. The systems are outdated and the processes are backwards. HR department does not support its employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would try to increase morale of the co-workers through more rewards and recognition. I would also upgrade many of the systems.

Pleasant work environment but no clear strategy/ direction

I have been working at Novartis Animal Health US

    Pros

    - pay is ok (but be prepared for tough negotiations)
    - good benefits
    - good work-life balance, flexible work schedule
    - pleasant work-environment, mutual respect
    - good leadership development program

    Cons

    - frequently changing and arbitrary R&D priorities, no clear mid-term strategy, decisions made in the blink of an eye
    - senior management seems to be out of touch with the rest of the workforce
    - huge bureaucratic burden due to project management strategy rather unsuited for R&D environment (Theory of Constraints) and user-unfriendly outdated software and databases
    - strong good ol' boys network

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop clinging to ideas which have proven to be unsuitable (ToC). Avoid changing the R&D strategy every 2 years - no momentum will be build by constantly changing project priorities. Do not make decisions without thinking through the long-term consequences.
