I have been working at Novellus

Pros

Time Flexibility. It is very convenient not having to report to work on a rigid schedule and take time off with minimal notice. Internal customers are always pleasant to work with which makes the stress level low.
Minimal politics involved at least at my level. Healthcare coverage is one of the best in any industry I’ve seen.

Cons

No future in sight no advancement options, no job and/or knowledge growth. The mentality at Novellus is that little attention is given to individual contributors. They are generally not well recognized for the amount of work and dedication they have on their job.

Management close-mindedness: Once you complete a project, task or program, you’re pigeon holed in to that expertise and not assigned anything beyond the scope of that. This makes for very high attrition rates which management denies.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top Heavy. Need to pay attention to regular employees. CEO is out of touch with the employees and the company and don't think he's agressively moving the company in the right direction. I think he just likes to keep busy and keep his job as a hobby.

I have been working at Novellus

    Pros

Novellus has ok pay. Car allowance just removed or it would be good pay. Novellus has good a good benefits package. Looks like local team will have contracts for a while. People are pretty good to work with. Novellus doesn't hire and fire as much as other companies, but they are working on that. For the most part everyone respects each other. Information sharing within Novellus is for the most part shared freely. No one really, for the most part, hides any information. Novellus employees that want to travel, get that chance from time to time. You just may not like the places you are sent.

    Cons

No room for growth as no one can move up without actually moving. Local team has been in place for a long time and they are unable to move up, which in turn makes it almost impossible to move up from the lower ranks. Some of the decisions made by the local team makes a person wonder sometimes. Very hard to get time off due to the low head count. As a cost savings, as with other semiconductor equipment manufactures, company mandates time off periodically. Bad thing is they have a contract that must be filled. This makes people take time off one week and then have to cover for someone else the next week which in turn give this person overtime. Not very cost effective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The first thing I would say is that you have to pay the employees that you want to keep. Removing a car allowance after putting it in peoples contract makes people start looking for employment. Putting up a 4 million dollar sign and then cutting 6k from peoples yearly salary is not the way to make people happy.

I have been working at Novellus

    Pros

Novellus has a good reputation in the industry, leading in some technology areas such as copper plating. There are many smart people at Novellus. There is opportunity to move around and learn new areas; for example between technology to marketing, marketing to sales, etc. Novellus is an ethical company. The customer is treated as king.

    Cons

The leadership at Novellus is not very effective. There is no clear direction. Ideas and new products to support the future of the company have been killed for the most part. There is no organized, methodical approach to looking at opportunities outside of the semiconductor industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to the future - we are being left behind. Talk to employees that are leaving the company and find out why.
