I worked at NuVasive

Pros

If you're a young person trying to get a start in medtech, it's a good spot. The lower and middle management ranks are reasonably competent and care about the well-being of their reports.

Cons

The place is a cult. Way too much time is spent worrying about "the culture", while not nearly enough is spent actually managing the business. Upper management is strong at brand marketing and raising capital. At building and maintaining a corporate infrastructure, hiring practices, IT systems, and the other nuts-and-bolts aspects of running a medtech business, they are the least competent group I have encountered in my career.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has grown stale, and it shows in the quarterly results. It's time to reinvent yourselves. Probably doesn't hurt to encourage some upper execs to retire to board seats and bring in some fresh blood to reinvigorate the company.

    I worked at NuVasive

    Pros

Better than average salary (but severely negated by hours of expected work)
    Nice Facilities and benefits

    Cons

At first blush this is an excellent place to work. Great salary and benefits and some nice co-workers . After your first day this facade starts to fall away. First, there is a statue of a Cheetah in the lobby and many flat screen televisions showing the same thing: A Cheetah running at full speed with flames morphing out of its backside. The company creed is "Absolute Responsiveness" and you quickly come to understand that this means ZERO personal life for you. You will be given a blackberry and told you must be "Easy to do biz with." Essentially translating: sleep with your blackberry and answer *any* request/email within 15 minutes..and they *will* come in 24/7. People don't chat in the break rooms, they grab their coffee, mutter a pleasantry and literally speedwalk back to their desks. There is a disturbing current of unmistakable churce silence mixed with a little anxiety in the air. After all, perhaps you aren't working fast enough or hard enough? (---even though you know you are).

Most people work 10-11 hour days at the office and then keep on going when they get home. This isn't because they necessarily want to, the fear of not being part of the corporate group-think culture demands it. One person told me that "if you aren't drinking and on anti-depressants, you soon will be.." and I must agree with the assessment. When you interview, you will see many people with dark circles and bags under their eyes. Take note, this means something. Bottom line: If you thrive in a culture-heavy "Orwellian 1984 group -think" environment, this is the place for you! Free thinkers and those who desire a healthy work/life balance - *Should not apply. Period*

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be exceptionally clear to potential employees what your weekly work time expectations are. Do not expect employees to complete all of your training modules and mandatory training exercises on their own time when they are first and foremost trying to learn their job. Offering a gym on-site is nice, but what is the point if you feel compelled to work through every lunch at your desk and well into the evening?

I have been working at NuVasive

    Pros

This is Nuvasive's mantra and it seems to be working for them. The company started in 1999 and is on pace to hit over $750M in revenue this year making them the 3rd largest med device company in the global spine market. Based on the large corporations they compete against this is pretty remarkable.
It doesn't look like things are slowing down as their stock hit a 52 week high just last week. Lots of companies claim to have a "great culture" but Nuvasive really goes above and beyond to protect their "billion dollar, start-up" vibe. - Fall Festivals, beer gardens, Cheetah Ball, free fruit & vending machines in the break rooms, etc.
Also, with the size of the company (under 2,000 EEs) there is easy access to leadership and the ability to affect change. Although the size of the company is smaller they still have a global presence and remain competitive with compensation and benefits.

    Cons

This is one of those make a negative a positive comment . . . they're looking for positive, smart, passionate problem-solvers to work here. If you're talented and are looking for other talented people to push you to get better this is the place for you. They require a lot from you but at the same time they give a lot back. Think of it as a basketball team competing for a championship - you're going to have to work hard personally to get to the playoffs but you're going to also need other talented people around you to win the championship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing . . . I like the upcoming changes to benefits and how you continue to position the company in the market to succeed. Continue to protect the company culture and never forget it's the people that make the company.
