I have been working at Nuance full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Fantastic technology, smart people, 4 weeks of vacation.

Cons

Management does not value people or diversity - only profits, uniformity, and submissiveness. Work/life balance non-existent in some areas - the company owns you 24x7. Layoffs two plus times per year whether needed or not. Very political.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on ethics and positive management styles, recognize people are assets that should be developed and nurtured. Board of directors could build a better, stronger company by replacing majority of exec management and requiring ethical business and management practices.

    I worked at Nuance

    Pros

    People are nice
    Compensation on par with industry
    Flexible hours
Not overloaded with formal processes which helps innovation
    Free soda and popcorn
Foosball and ping pong in the cafeteria gives a nice break in the day

    Cons

As Nuance is an acquire-then-slash-and-burn megaplex, the hallways are filled with the sad faces of the beaten survivors of previous acquisitions.
Products will ship on time regardless of quality.
    Regular layoffs.
Everything is tied to quarterly financials, no vision beyond that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change from being at least as customer-serving as you currently are stockholder-serving. Completely rework the way acquisitions are performed. Virtually everyone at Nuance is there because of one acquisition or another, and most can share a unique story of how their acquisition was handled poorly... ask around!
Take more pride in producing quality products. Don't be afraid to hold releases beyond the quarterly edge if they're not ready for prime time.
