It is a company highly resistant to change and lorded over autocratically by its CEO.

I worked at Nuance full-time for more than a year

Pros

Some very bright people are there.

Cons

Over time, the bright people tend to leave because they get fed up.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify your product line. Focus on a few areas and do them extremely well rather than continue to support hundreds of products in a mediocre fashion.

Cutting-edge technology, but poor delivery and execution from management

    I worked at Nuance full-time

    Pros

    - Best-in-class speech recognition technology.
    - Very talented engineers.
    - Good collaboration if you're working within a small team (this is not true of the larger, more distributed teams).
    - Generous PTO.

    Cons

    - Upper management is a complete disgrace. They limit the employee's abilities to advance within the company.
    - Very little innovation from within the company due to large number of acquisitions. No emphasis placed on internal growth.
    - No recognition given to hard workers who contribute. This is even true of employees who have been with the company for many years.
    - Larger teams are very poorly organized and management does nothing to improve their situation or provide them with tools to rectify the problems.
    - Lousy benefits package. Medical/dental costs are mostly out-of-pocket which really defeats the purpose of having company-sponsored benefits.
    - Pay is not on par with most tech companies in the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the C-level execs who are butchering the company (including the CEO) and allow employees to be recognized for their work.

I have been working at Nuance full-time

    Pros

Exciting technology, some smart people to work with, open communication with management team

    Cons

No work-life balance; limited time to think about development because you are too busy; managers know about workload issue and would like to help but have no immediate budget to hire; management team appreciates your contribution, but the compensation is not as good as outside

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to solve brand confusion, be supportive to hard-working folks and allocate the resources reasonably, try to keep great people stay with the company
