Pros

You get to work with many different technologies and development frameworks as long as you're not involved in IVR development.

Taking PTO is pretty flexible so far.

Cons

Compensation for going above and beyond is absolutely awful. Also, being one of the first in the company to successfully implement solutions and developing applications in markets the company was never in before yields the same poor compensation as developing the same type of applications that the company has been developing for more than a decade.

There also seems to be a lot of favoritism toward more senior developers whom some of the newer guys have proven themselves to be just as competent as.

Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate your less senior developers by giving them incentives to continue pioneering projects that haven't even been attempted in the company before. Also, senior management needs to stop sinking money into acquiring other companies and instead needs to focus on fairly compensating their underpaid developers. All of these acquisitions just seem to add bloat, confusion, and integration nightmares. Do we REALLY need to buy more than one company that translates voicemail to text ? Really ?!

Interesting products but mid-level managers are incompetent.

    Pros

The technology is the leader in the industry. Nuance has a history of success. The salaries and benefits are competitive and the managers have a lax attitude towards working from home.

    Cons

There is a glut of managers who spend most of their time bolstering statistics to make their engineering groups appear effective. The managers are too busy jockeying for advancement to notice that the lower level employees are floundering and unhappy. There engineers are led by non-engineers so code quality and structure are not valued, nor are employees who promote these things.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to interview the low level employees in a way that they are certain the feedback won't affect their job status. They need to ask directed questions about the performance of their managers. They need to get rid of managers that don't make their employees happy and replace them with people who are competent at more than just creating pretty graphs and charts.

    Pros

Great and innovative technology, some great products, and others with huge potential
Stable company with a global position
    Some great people

    Cons

    Little respect for employees
Management focuses more on acquisitions than developing technology
Very hierarchical, with more focus on executive presentations than productive work

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and trust them
