I have been working at Nucor

Pros

The 4 on and 4 off rotating 12 hour schedule gives a lot of time off when you are on it, they change your schedule quite frequently at the cold side. The pay is the motivating factor.

Cons

There is a huge buddy system here. A lot of Nucor employees that were denied promotions for several years (17+) at other plants have transferred to this new plant and have been promoted to supervisor due to lack of management choices. The heat and dust is a problem, employees just have to make due.

Advice to Management

Communication with all employees, way too many secrets about schedules, business climate and just routine daily operations. Just because a person can play golf doesn't mean they are the best or earned the next promotion.

    Pros

Great level of autonomy, relating to your work. Pay is good, stable.

    Cons

Nucor is a company trying to appear as though the values and culture that Ken Iverson started are still at work and valid under the current management. In reality, management has slowly been dismantling the management culture built by Mr. Iverson and replacing it with a more traditional business model. The problem is that they are trying to get the employee commitment that the Ken Iverson model brought, while having the management style of a run-of-the-mill non-Nucor company.

    Advice to Management

Either tell employees that Ken Iverson's Nucor is as dead as Ken Iverson is, or live up the values and culture that you espouse on paper.
