Great at patient healthcare, bad at business and internal functions, low wages (for non-union).

I worked at OHSU full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Surrounded by very bright people.
Everyone seems to share a genuine interest in the care of patients.
Flexibility within many departments.

Cons

Very slow to get things done and make changes.
Departments are "silos". While communication has improved, each department operates under its own business model, and without common direction and goals.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More direction must be made from the top-down with a clear well defined policy and overall goals.
If you spend a lot of money to hire a consulting firm to spend over a year working on a project, and give you advice, it's fine to get department feedback, but don't give the power to the departments to dismiss their advice entirely.
There has to be an organizational restructuring.
Much money is wasted on work that is repeated across departments, and little is done to help those departments that don't draw in very much money. Either help them or drop them.

not very busy, you have balanced work and life here in my job position.

    Cons

salary under median level (close to the low bound ) based on journal survey. every year need to worry about next year's funding. no promotion for this position. no enough career network in this position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

classify this job position. make it more attractive by developing a competitive career development plan and at least a little bit competitive salary.

I have been working at OHSU full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Because OHSU is so large, those in the research departments get a lot of infrastructure support. There is support with contract negotiations, grant setup and closing, and IRB applications are pretty smooth. Benefits are also very good. Very generous vacation and sick time, and the health insurance is more than adequate for a 20-something.

    Cons

Research jobs vary drastically since researchers get a lot of independence with their labs. Because of this, there may be a good deal of disconnect (with researcher staff in the same department not knowing what other labs are doing).
