    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hire someone within just because it's convenient. A leader must be chosen correctly, otherwise you risk destroying a team. You're better off hiring a great leader with less experience, than an average/neutral leader with excess of experience. You're hiring someone that can MANAGE and LEAD employees and do some of the work. But a lot more of the work entails LEADERSHIP. Leadership > Experience

A bad leader can destroy and suffocate a great team/employees. I've seen it happen.

I have been working at OHSU full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some chances for advancement and pay is excellent. Peers are very competent in their specialties. Incentives for healthy life choices are plentiful.

    Cons

There is no vision or mission statement for IT. IT as a whole lacks leadership and direction; OHSU is constantly behind the curve when it comes to technology. The culture is severely dysfunctional and people are more worried about playing politics and appeasing others than doing what's best for the patient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get involved with day to day details now and then. Get to know the people working for you by name and know what projects they are working on. Take some direction for IT or it's going to get taken for you.
