I have been working at OHSU full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

High quality clinical work in a collegial setting. Beautiful small city that is easy to get arou nd, much like a small town. Spectacular lifestyle, but must not mind gray skies and drizzle! The relationship between clinical departments is wonderful. If you are very motivated you can go far. OHSU is a home for academic underachievers among medical schools. You can advance very far by publishing and pushing yourself a bit.

Cons

Limitations in salary compared with other positions in other universities. This must be weighed against overall considerations of lifestyle. The city has much to enjoy. Your commute will not be difficult, generally. the occasional icy roads can be a bit treacherous. On a clear day there is no more beautiful place, but clear days are in the minority! The university is, like many state run institutions, subject to state budget cuts and loss of federal support. Most often, funding is at least adequate, however.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the parking situation! Improved salaries would be extremely helpful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hire someone within just because it's convenient. A leader must be chosen correctly, otherwise you risk destroying a team. You're better off hiring a great leader with less experience, than an average/neutral leader with excess of experience. You're hiring someone that can MANAGE and LEAD employees and do some of the work. But a lot more of the work entails LEADERSHIP. Leadership > Experience

A bad leader can destroy and suffocate a great team/employees. I've seen it happen.
