Pros

Oakton is an environment where you are really free to invent solutions, collaborate across departments, and grow as an individual and professional. I've never experienced such a nurturing environment.

Cons

There is a bit of a cliquishness. Long time Oakton folks can be dismissive.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Underlying some of the issues between faculty and administration is the perception that neither side understands and supports the vision of the other side. Faculty see the administration as leaving them out of key decisions and the administration appear to see the faculty as unable to focus on the big picture. If there were an increase in opportunities for "airing of grievances", there would be fewer skirmishes.

    Treated with respect by other faculty. Supportive environment for students.

    Adjunct pay is terrible, but not as bad as other places.

    Pros

    - Plenty of PTO.
    - Good benefits.
    - Challenging work that always changes for the better. You definitely don't get bored.

    Cons

    - Inter-departmental animosity
    - Being staff I've been told directly by an Admin I have less value than faculty.
    - Thoughts regarding how a department should be run is very antiquated.
    - Arbitrary rules regarding schedule makes it not a family friendly place to work.
    - We get preached things must be done by the book only to find out "by the book" is not really practiced throughout the college. Probably why they get sued all the time from current and past employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Administration needs to lose the "us v them" attitude.
    - Jobs and personal life must be balanced to keep an employee happy. Not everyone thinks our work days should be at least 12 hours a day.
