I worked at Occidental Petroleum as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Great workplace environment, smart and able employees and managers. Upper level managment has understanding of geologic and engineering issues making communication easy. Very personable people to work with.

Cons

Communication between field office and main office in Houston was slow sometimes. Occasionally took a day or two to receive further instruction after finishing specified assignment.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to advance employees with science backgrounds and understanding of the science behind drilling.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

good hard working employees, 9/80 schedule, few good managers, few layoffs

    Cons

very young management lacking direction for the business units, promotions based on favourites, management thinks internationals are glad to have a job, lately became very disfunctional with diffrences in executive management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

take a deeper look at who is running business units, their lack of experience will take this company onto losses

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    9/80, vacation package, nice office

    Cons

Terrible management not too efficient or skilled, some of them are very young for management. You can be fired for no reason just because of your own, honest opinion on how to improve business. To get a promotion, you have to be on the management's good side not on your own merits, experience, or education. Not too middle-age friendly, way too many young engineers/geologists without any previous experience, which is too risky in oil and gas business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When someone becomes a manager it means that person has a lot of experience. Hire managers with proper skills and a lot of wisdom because it's affecting the employees under their supervisions.
