Current Employee - Reservoir Engineer in Houston, TX
Current Employee - Reservoir Engineer in Houston, TX

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Great employees, reasonable bosses that care about employees and try to grow their potential. Aggressive company allows new employees to gain experience at a very rapid rate.

Cons

Reserves has become an endless array of PowerPoint documentations and spreadsheets. It takes away valuable time with doing what's really important, which is finding more oil/gas. Also, hard to take vacation given such a heavy workload/responsibilities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try not too ask employees to run every scenario/case that you can think of...we only have so many hours in the day. Also, we need time to take vacation- at least 2 wks a year.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some benefits - short vesting period for retirement account.
Good relocation package if you can get opportunities to move within the company - which are few.

    Cons

Some upper management are oblivious to the negative culture and reputation that the company has, which shows a complete lack of leadership. An ‘employer of choice’ does not foster an environment with different expectations of conduct between employees. Most oil and gas companies stand head and shoulders above Oxys pay, work place conduct, opportunities, training and development, safety commitments and HR policies.

The industry has a very aging workforce throughout all companies, but Oxy seems to becoming adept at still treating employees as if it is the end of the 1990s - when oil was a low priced commodity.

As some would state, the results speak for themselves – which is why Oxy has one of the highest turnovers of professional staff in the industry – and their HR staff continue to wonder why.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the high turnover of employees as a reflection on the company instead of a reflection of the people leaving.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great workplace environment, smart and able employees and managers. Upper level managment has understanding of geologic and engineering issues making communication easy. Very personable people to work with.

    Cons

Communication between field office and main office in Houston was slow sometimes. Occasionally took a day or two to receive further instruction after finishing specified assignment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to advance employees with science backgrounds and understanding of the science behind drilling.
