Very good work environment, however it all depends on where you work. Some departments are less relaxed than others.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum as an intern

Pros

Not very stressful work environment and a lot of encouraging people to turn to.

Cons

Very strict about GPA requirements

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open minded about grades especially once interns have proven their ability to work.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice co-workers. 9/80. Young people get big responsibilities since day one. Good offices, not cubicles. Good IT support. Team work is promoted. Sponsored gym membership.

    Cons

Too much uncertainty with the current CEO. He is breaking the company into pieces. He was a great CFO but not a good CEO. He is not innovative or creative, the only thing he can think of to increase stock price is to sell the company into pieces.

One of the strengths Oxy used to have was the ability to operate in countries with high political risk, now the CEO is selling everything with high political risk. Also he announces and doesn't execute, changing plans quarter by quarter. CEO also named a 35 year old CFO that was not even familiar with the oil industry terminology. CEO gave the order to put young people in charge, people with less than 5 years of experience are becoming managers, making mistakes that cost the company millions, and creating a bad work environment.

The internal "mafias" are rampant and if you're not part of one, your career won't go anywhere regarding of your performance.

    Technical Excellence is on decline.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to think long term, not only about the stock price for the next quarter.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good pay. Good benefits. 9/80 work schedule.

    Cons

Oxy way is a total lack of structure, procedures and standards. Highly political. Employee evaluations based on perception not data. No career ladder. No employee thought out development. Some come to work and do their well defined job while others are responsible for an effort cradle to grave. The Oxy way is to make it up as you go along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to successful companies in your industry and learn. Deal fairly with employees. Think of their future and develop them.
