Pros

Honestly everyone in the store was great to work with. Fun merchandise. Free health insurance for full timers.

Cons

From the moment you are hired they are looking for ways to get rid of you. Impossible to get time off. You could put a request in a month in advanced and would get anger from all upper management. Get told after request ok'ed that no you can not have it and the slips you write it on goes missing because you are not allowed to take them for yourself. Everything would change day to day. Depending on if the DM or the RM came if word was that one would come it would be walking on egg shells. No one would take responsibility for them selfs. Blame would be put to the person under them. Not enough staffing at all. Cutting hours then wondering why customers walk out. Had gone to management for almost 2 years over an associate who would cuss at shoppers hide in the bathroom for at least an hour a shift and yet nothing would be done. Any questions to management would result in them telling you I don't know call customer service all over returning a 5 dollar item. No chance for a promotion no matter what they tell you.. You will get the run around even from the DM's. Not worth your time as a full time job at all. Part time job it's not that bad.

    Pros

Starting pay is higher than other stores in the area, very accommodating with scheduling needs, generous employee discount. Benefits to full time/salaried employees (after 1 year). It can be a very fun work environment.

    Cons

Sadly, Job Lot is no longer hiring to fill full time positions in their stores. There are no health benefits, vacation or sick time for part timers. Every employee is constantly under video surveillance in every corner of the store but the bathroom, and worse of all, there is a point system that is demoralizing and keeps the door revolving by dismissing good employees for such small infractions as missing a clock punch. Management is constantly having to deal with being forced to cut hours, while hourly employees cannot depend on a set number of hours. Prospects for career opportunities in the store setting are slim, as salaried/full time assistant manager positions are being replaced/filled by part time keyholder positions for less pay with no benefits. Layoffs are standard operating procedure after the holiday season.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Productivity, sales and moral would be so much better, if employees were only provide a living wage with benefits, better opportunities for advancement and given job security.

    Pros

OSJL is a really fun place to work because as a deep discount store the shoppers are generally in a good mood. The store attracts workers who are intelligent and friendly and just happen to be caught up in the recession when jobs are scarce. OSJL offers a higher starting salary than most places and a 20% discount.

    Cons

The company works on a "points system," meaning that you receive points for any infraction. Some are silly, but if you get too many points you are fired. They don't tell you about the point system til after you've started working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow workers to drink water between breaks. Everyone gets dehydrated and then has a headache and doesn't feel well. Let people have (non-paid) sick days without penalty of points. Lighten up on the points system; you're losing a lot of good employees.
