I worked at Ocean State Job Lot

    Pros

    Health benefits were good
    Coworkers were generally pleasant
    Store discount is available
Learned what I don't ever want in life

    Cons

Very old fashioned workplace that won't let you manage your own time
Departments here are all about passing the blame complete with backstabbing and favoritism
No internet - can't even google simple excel questions, let alone a 3 min sanity break
Isolation in cubicle - barely left my cubicle, barely talked to anyone in person
Difficult to manage a long commute - you must time arrival within a 7 minute period or sit around unpaid before you can clock in
1 year of work before you can get 1 week of vacation
It gets creepy when you find out how many cameras are in the workplace
Low pay, low rate of raises

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know you'll never change, but you need to at least make a lot of things about the work environment clear during interviews.

I worked at Ocean State Job Lot

    Pros

There is a sense of ownership of your store. You make merchandising decisions on alot of the product and creativity is encouraged. Free medical, decent bonuses, and a long weekend off in each of the lst three quarters are great perks.

    Cons

Policy and procedure changes can happen overnight based on a single incident. Long-term ramifications and even immediate impact on the stores seems like it's not considered at times.
If your first-day sales were poor on specific items, you would be called "stupid" in many different ways on the Friday morning conference calls with ownership. And, at least in the district I was in, favortisim ran rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ownership should reconsider the people closest to their ears. Most of their stores are being run by good, competent, and hard-working folks who care about their jobs. Somebody needs to look at how many quality managers have left or been terminated from that company and ask some questions.
